Occupational Therapy in McAllen & the Rio Grande Valley

Our licensed occupational therapists help patients regain independence in daily life. From post-surgical recovery to fall prevention, we deliver expert care in your home.

Occupational therapy (OT) focuses on helping people perform the everyday activities that matter most — getting dressed, preparing meals, managing medications, bathing safely, and maintaining independence at home. At Professional Rehab Services, our occupational therapists bring this essential care directly into patients' homes across the Rio Grande Valley, where the real challenges of daily living exist.

Unlike therapy in a clinic, home-based occupational therapy allows our OTs to evaluate and treat patients in their actual living environment. This means assessing the real bathroom where a patient showers, the actual kitchen where they prepare food, and the specific hallways and stairs they navigate every day. This practical approach leads to more relevant treatment plans and better outcomes.

One of the most impactful services our occupational therapists provide is comprehensive home safety assessment. Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, and many falls happen at home. Our OTs identify hazards — loose rugs, poor lighting, lack of grab bars, cluttered pathways — and recommend specific modifications that reduce risk. They also train patients in safe transfer techniques, balance strategies, and energy conservation methods.

For patients recovering from joint replacement surgery, our OTs guide them through the rehabilitation process with a focus on regaining functional independence. After a hip replacement, for example, patients need to learn new techniques for dressing, bathing, and getting in and out of bed that protect the surgical site. Our therapists teach these techniques and provide adaptive equipment training when needed.

Patients with neurological conditions — stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis — often experience significant changes in their ability to perform daily tasks. Our occupational therapists use evidence-based interventions to address motor deficits, cognitive challenges, and perceptual impairments that interfere with independence.

Caregiver education is a cornerstone of our OT services. We recognize that family members play a critical role in the patient's recovery, and we train them on safe assistance techniques, activity modification, and strategies to promote the patient's independence rather than dependence.

Our entire OT team is bilingual in English and Spanish. In the Rio Grande Valley, where the majority of families speak Spanish at home, this ensures that every evaluation, treatment session, and educational interaction is clear, accurate, and culturally appropriate.
